Portugal has become one of Europe's most sought-after MICE destinations: accessible, safe, affordable and rare in its diversity. This guide gathers the essentials for designing a successful seminar, incentive or team building: from the role of a DMC to budget, via the six destinations and the seasons.
What is a DMC?
A DMC (Destination Management Company) is a receptive agency based on the ground. It designs and runs your event end to end: destination recommendation, hotel negotiation, venues, transfers, activities, catering, technical production and on-site coordination. The benefit: a single point of contact who knows the terrain, the suppliers and the real prices, and who stays present from brief to invoice.
Why Portugal
- Accessible: direct flights under three hours from most European capitals; international airports in Lisbon, Porto, Faro, Funchal and Ponta Delgada.
- Affordable: at equivalent quality, 15 to 30% below comparable destinations in France or Italy.
- Bilingual and safe: English-speaking suppliers, one of the world's safest countries, a mild climate much of the year.
- Diverse: a cosmopolitan capital, UNESCO vineyards, plains, Atlantic coast, subtropical and volcanic islands, all within short reach.
Three formats
Most projects fall into three broad families, often combined within a single programme:
- Seminars: plenaries, conventions, board off-sites, from 10 to 1,200 attendees.
- Incentives: reward trips and premium experiences, region by region.
- Team building: cohesion, local know-how and a change of scene.
